What is insulin resistance? The Mayo clinic defines it as a resistance to the hormone insulin, resulting in increasing blood sugar. The hormone insulin helps control the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. With insulin resistance, the body’s cells don’t respond normally to insulin. Glucose can’t enter the cells as easily, so it builds up in the blood. This can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Ben Bikman have been invaluable in learning about insulin resistance and how to reverse it. I strongly advise you to look them up if you are finding that you are insulin resistant as well.
Dr. Jason Fung’s book, “Life In The Fasting Lane” has been invaluable. It has helped me understand what is going on in my body and how fasting and low carb diet affect insulin resistance.
When I found out I had Insulin resistance and was a few chapters into “Life In The Fasting Lane,” I started small. I fasted at night. So after dinner I wouldn’t snack and eat anything. I drank water until I had breakfast the next morning. Everyone is different and you need to figure out what works best for you. My fasts after dinner are at least 14 hours long. I also quit snacking during the day and cut out carbs. It was and still is A LOT of eggs, meat, avocados, pickles, and broccoli.
Eleven days is how long it took my blood sugar to go down and function properly. My blood sugar has only been regulated for a week. There were days I didn’t want to keep going, I wanted some carbs. It is worth it! I’m still pretty strict with carbs and fruit. I still don’t snack. I still fast through the night and have breakfast at least 14 hours after dinner.
I am still a beginner with this stuff! It’s still hard. But it’s worth it!
Here is Dr. Jason Fung’s book that I was talking about. It’s a great resource!
